Heart-Brain Coherence
How your heart field impacts your brain and health
The Biology of Stress:
When you’re stressed, your body doesn’t just feel off or get tired; it undergoes a massive biochemical shift. When under stress, 1,400 different biochemical reactions are triggered in response to stress. Hormones and neurotransmitters flood your system, shaping how you perceive the world, how you feel, and ultimately, how you think. Once in the stress brain, looping patterns often emerge.
The Stress Loop
You feel stressed (or negative emotion) → Your brain generates thoughts that match that emotion→ Your brain searches for past experiences that validate those thoughts (subconscious memories) → Those memories trigger similar emotions → The cycle repeats
Instead of experiencing life in the present, you begin reacting to it through the lens of past stress patterns. You shift from truly living to surviving.
What’s Happening Inside Your Body
1. Adrenaline→ Released when your fight-or-flight system is activated, adrenaline gives you a surge of energy. In short bursts, it’s helpful. But over time, repeated spikes create emotional highs and lows that can lead to exhaustion and burnout.
2. Catecholamines → These chemicals impair the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain responsible for focus, planning, and decision-making. When this happens:
Clear thinking becomes difficult
You struggle to make decisions
You lose access to your “higher perspective,” and solutions feel hard to find
3. Cortisol→ Known as the primary stress hormone, cortisol has long-term effects when chronically elevated.
It can shrink the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for memory
It disrupts your ability to retain and recall information
It lowers levels of DHEA, the anti-aging hormone
Over time, this can lead to what’s often called a defeat response, which is feelings of depression or hopelessness.
Survival Mode vs. Living Fully
When stress dominates your system, it puts you into survival mode. This state is governed by your autonomic nervous system, which has two main branches:
Sympathetic (Fight or Flight) → preparing you to react quickly to perceived threats
Parasympathetic (Rest and Digest) → your body can repair, restore, and regulate itself
Chronic stress keeps you stuck in the sympathetic state, which inevitably triggers the biochemical responses we talked about. For a short period of time, this is fine, helpful even. But over long periods of time, this is where problems like chronic anxiety or health issues begin to arise.
Burnout: When the System Breaks Down
Eventually, your body reaches a limit. When it can no longer adapt to ongoing stress, you enter the burnout stage. At this point:
You’re no longer operating from your rational, analytical brain
You’re functioning from a stress-driven, reactive state
You feel exhausted, unmotivated, and emotionally drained
And the loop deepens:
When you feel this way, it becomes harder to take care of yourself. Who wants to work out, eat healthy, or participate in other healthy habits when you're that drained and unmotivated?
Heart-Brain Coherence
One of the best ways to break the looping pattern is through heart coherence. This is an optimal state where heart, mind, and emotions are synchronized and balanced.
Discordant Vs. Coherent
Being in a coherent state helps us build emotional and physical resilience. And because our outer world reflects our inner world, if we are in energetic coherence, we will attract in situations and circumstances that mirror coherence. The opposite is true as well. If we are in a place of incoherence or chaos, your external experiences mirror the discordance.
Our bodies and cells directly respond to these measurable energetic fields, too. Cells can only begin to heal when provided with an environment of emotional and energetic coherence.
As a certified HeartMath healthcare professional, I’ve found this technique not only regulates the nervous system but also provides immense benefit for those with anxiety, depression, fatigue, and emotional overwhelm. And because our heart information energetically precedes the brain, heart coherence opens up intuitive abilities. And these are just some of the benefits!
I made a personalized meditation and step-by-step guide/journal to help others tap into the specific HM techniques to bring their heart-brain into coherence. If interested → click here
